Default First time Oil Change problems

Just got a slightly used 07 Road King Classic. Changing all three tanks @5000 miles. Got the motor and the tranny done. The primary is killing me. I cannot get all the T-27 torx screws out of the round cover, one is stripped, one is directly behind the passenger floorboard, which is on so dang tight I have to buy more tools to get it off. Of course, the tank is drained. Any other way to get new oil in, or do I have to replace the entire cover? So much for saving a few bucks... Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

The best way to loosen the torx screws is to lightly tap them with a impact screwdriver. Now that you have stripped them you might want to replace them with allen head screws. Passenger floorboard must be removed, unless you have "Harley Goodies" or Soos floorboard extenders. Be sure to use a new gasket when you re-install cover.

Thanks, Mike. Got the gasket. Who makes the impact screwdriver for torx? Sears? Or does that work like a ratchet, where I would need torx bits? I'm kinda new to this workin' on the bike or anything that isn't a standard bolt...

The reason for the stripped bolts is that someone probably used a chinese made bit on the head. Probably from harbor freight. That's what happens. They leave a mess for the next guy. Once you get them out, the stock OEM replacements are fine, jst buy quality American made bits from Craftsman or Snap On or Mac and a small impact driver.

Man, I feel your pain. I wound up using a ball-peen and chisel to CAREFULLY turn the damn torx screws out, and then replaced them with Allenheads. My local Ace Hardware has a chrome nuts and bolts box.
You have to remove the left rear floorboard. Period.
I recently did my 4th oil change, and found that if I remove my regulator in front of the oil filter (two 7/16 nuts, and only takes a couple of minutes) it was easier to put a piece of cardboard under the filter and I didn't have the mess of oil running all over everything before it hit the pan.

No you don't!

If the mount is on the highest position you can reach all screws with no problem. I do it all the time!

On the 06 I can add fluid threw the inspection cover which a little up and to the rear of the round cover. Just have to use funnel.

Unfortunately, he has an 07 which did away with the inspection cover IIRC.

I always remove the passenger floorboard for easier access. It's 1 bolt so no big issue.

As stated previously.
1-Get some floorboard extenders. They provide much comfort and facolitate the cover removal.
2-replace the Torx with allen heads!
3- Use a piece of aluminum foil (heavy duty) and make a few folds in it. Slide foil under filter prior to removal of filter and let drain into pan or other container(I use a coffee can). Have a good oil filter removal wrench available.
Note foil in picture.Works great. Also helps to use a pair of latex gloves. Some will get away but not as much as not using a pan.
Once you have any and all plugs removed, check for metal shavings as the center magnet will collect these. Also inspect the O rings to make sure they are in good condition and not torn. Keep several spares.
This is a "two beer" job. 10 if you are patient while letting the oil drip out of the pan
