Default 1 Quart Low Between Oil Changes??

Noticed I was down 1 quart of oil between 2500 miles and 4500 miles. Obviously engine is new. Went on 2 long rides, both in the heat. One to Laughlin (about 700 miles) and one to Hollister (about 900 miles). Should losing one quart of oil be considered normal under these conditions???

gliderman, depends who you ask. The MoCo says that 1 quart in 1500 miles is normal. I say that's a bunch of BS. I'm batteling the same problem. Some guys say they don't even check their oil level between changes.

Not sure if you're aware, but the 2005 Touring (like my - Ultra) models have a known problem with valve stem seals (Search this board on "valve stem seals"). Any case the Moco has a published standard on this and the "normal" oil usage. Link https://www.hdforums.com/m_92790/mpa..._/tm.htm#92790

Good luck fighting city hall.

I may drop 1/2 qt at most on long runs (500 mile or more). you loose part of your oil due to misting into the breather (air cleaner). When you change oil, you fill and check it on the jiffy stand. always check your oil on the jiffy stand. When you change filters, it takes 4 qts not the 3.45 qts that the manual says. if you put in 3.5 qts with a new filter, run the bike for 15 minutes and recheck your level. add until you hit the full mark HOT.

In my opinion...not normal. My '06 SG has 8,000 miles on it and I just took it on a 2800 mile trip where it used no oil at all. I now have about 3200 miles since my oil change and the level still hasn't changed on the dipstick.

I would think it depends on how many miles are on the bike..........
Less than 2000 normal
Over 200,000 normal

between those number, not normal

There's some truth to this.

If thats normal then all of the bikes that are using little or no oil must have a problem. I guess the MoCo better do a recall on them...........

Since I bought my bike new, with 6 miles on it. I lost 1/2 quart during the first 500 mile. Since that time I have not lost anything between recommended service times. Im pretty happy with that.

06 EG. Lost about .5 qt in the first 500 miles. At 2500 miles anything lost was not measurable. I am pretty supprised. I have not owned a HD for several years. Last was a 79 Shovel. .5 qt every 2000 was normal for that one. With the 06 EG I would say oil use is almost nonexistant, almost.
