I'm sure about Tom Tom....I have a TOM TOm in my car and it is THEE worst unit I ever bought.....takes 10 minutes to connect to satelites....battery SUCKS and so does the unit.

I have Garmin 550 on the Bike...on a scale of 1-10 it's a 50!

Navtec is one of the two commercial companies DoD sells access to the database to. Most of the major GPS mfgs, Garmin, TomTom etc. use their databases. Then they just integrate with their own proprietary symbology and routing algorithms to create their units.

Graham,
Sounds like a plan. I hope to be over in the late August/early September timeframe, but I'll give you advance warning when it settles down. As far as the built-in units in cars, they're very convenient, usually have slightly larger screens than the stand-alone units, and integrate the voice prompts through the audio system, but they're expensive to buy updates for, and of course if the unit goes on the fritz, you have to remove half the dash to get them out. I think buying the stand alone makes a lot of sense.
Cheers,
JP
