Annual "Road to the Sun" in Glacier Nat'l Park last weekend. Arrived in Whitefish Montana 'bout 9:30 Friday night. Before heading up to the condo we had a refreshment in town. On the way up the mountain my dad noticed scraping when turning left, although worse than usual he didn't think too much of it as he always drags his floorboards in the twisties. Come out in the morning and all the primary fluid is on the garage floor. We figure he left his stand down (it was bent) and it slammed into his primary cover and putting a hole in it. What to do now...we're on a ski hill, in the off season, not too may folks around, and no harley dealer for miles. Went to the local NAPA store picked up some plumbers putty, pulled the cover off, cleaned it, sanded it and applied the putty. Let it sit for 20 mins as per instruction. Put it all back together with some fresh oil and off we were. No leaks no issues. Cured hard as rock. We went on to ride another 1500 kilometers after that.
Plumbers putty = good ****.
No Harley dealer for miles?
Montana Harley Davidson is in Kalispell, just 10 miles down US 93 from Whitefish. They are located on US 93, just about one mile south of the couthouse.
I lived there from Sept of 2005 until until April of 2009, and bought my 2007 Jake and Ellwood Blue Ultra from them in Dec. of 2006.
They are very friendly and helpful. next time, give them a try.
Many Canadian Harley riders stop in during the summer, and I'm surprized you haven't. I'm sure they have bailed out more than one broken down Harley down from Canada in the last few years.
Montana HD in Missoula and Kalispell are usually mandatory stops on the way to Sturgis for many riders too.
Sorry forgot to mention the Plumbers Putty came from Ace Hardware. Bought 2 packages, and holding the unused package in my hands right now it is called Plumbers Epoxy Putty "Stops Leaks - Hardens like Steel in 20 Mins" is what it says. It's the Ace brand. Works great. Yeah called Kalispell HD but they didn't have a primary cover in stock. Ride safe Y'all.

Ok that is plumbers Epoxy putty big difference between it and PP, just so you know.
From: Creektown aka Lower Alabama, but not that low
Sorry. I grew up in a hardware and anything epoxy meant a lot more money to fix later. Plumbers Putty is a gray/tan putty that remains pliable to keep a seal even with moderate vibration. Epoxy is a whole 'nother thing. I wonder how many drains will have to be chiseled out of sinks because Ace did their thing?
