Default Primary chain adjustment

Just checked the primary chain and it has a 1/4" play. The book calls for 5/8 " play. Is this too tight or does it matter as long as it isn't too lose?

THere is usually a bit of runout on the sprockets that causes thight/loose conditions when measuring the chain play.

See if you can bump the starter w/o letting the engine start. Chances are that if you can do that, you will see that it's not that tight all the way around. Ideally, see if you can get your measurement at the loosest point.

what is the best way to adjust the chain. Mine was a little loose. I loosen the bolt two turns like the manual says and I have a hard time moving it up just a small amount. It seems to go to far and cause the chain to be tight. There has to be an easy trick here....

Take you scoot to a qualified Technician! If infact you are getting the reading you claim, you have problems! Sprockets do not have the out of roundness you claim to have.

The chain addjustment should be made at the tightest point in the chain. 5/8 is where I put mine, cold. Beleive it or not, too tight is worse than too loose. The tensioner shoe is a bit aggravating. It may take several tries to get it exactly right, but take your time and get it where it needs to be. Mine needed alot of adjustment at 1000 miles, but after 4000 miles ( the last time I checked it ) it was fine.

I used a 9/16 ( I think thats the size of the nut that holds the tensioner ) socket, and a 6" extension. When you get the nut loose enough to allow the shoe to move, just wiggle the socket while applying upward pressure and the shoe will move up. Like I said, it may take several tries to get it right where it needs to be.

Mark position of adjuster with slots and move up one slot at a time untill correct play reached
