Default Help with removing mufflers

I'm swapping out my Rinehart True Duals and having a really hard time getting the mufflers separated from the headers. I'm thinking of using some penetrating oil at the junction to hopefully loosen them up. Any other ideas?

Penetrating oil should work, maybe even running the bike to heat them up a bit.

I used a rubber mallet and lightly tapped at the perimeter of the head of the slip on to get them to move.

i use the pb stuff that you can get at any auto chain store. it's power blaster. the pb stuff i'm mentioning is an aerosol spray can, white with a yellow plastic top. a very good product. WD-40 is not a penetrating oil, so it would not help much in your case. there are several penetrating oils, but i have found through my experience that the power blaster is easy to find and really gets into joints to help disassembly. give it a try, great stuff.

And use anti-seize on the joint when you put the new ones on.

A friend just did this on his sporty. Said he struggled for quite a while, then decided to try some WD40. In no time the old mufflers were off. Note that he was replacing the old ones because of damage caused by a minor accident so did not care what happened to the old ones so keep that in mind. I believe he said something about a monkey wrench was used as well.

The pb stuff is awesome!
Spray it on and run the bike to heat it up 2 or 3 times. If the bike doesn't heat it up enough use a small mapp torch. If that don't work an air hammer with a drive head works too.

Just a word. Erical talks about never seize when mounting the slip ons. Be careful I'm not sure, but some metal compounds will tarnish the chrome. I'd look for a heat acceptable silicone. It will also help seal.

PB Blaster is the only way to go as far as penetrating lube. I had to have some exhaust work done on my 96 P/U that had close to 200K miles and I just warmed it up and sprayed then repeated a couple of times before I took it the shop and the mechanic said he's never had such an easy time with header bolts.

When i changed out the factory ones on my Deuce, actuall had to work a screwdriver under the lips of the mufflers edges, bent them out a but to get them off. and these were only 3 months old.
