Default engine heat

I have an 05 ultra with vented fairings. I am going on trip to Montana and was thinking about taking my lower fairings off so I can get more air to the motor. Is this necessary or does the motor get enough air with the vents open?

depends a lot of what type of riding are you doing and where??? If you are going to Vegas and cruising the strip - take them off. most other riding - they should be fine. just my .02

Ride it. I leave my lowers on all year long.....and mine don't have the sliding doors. You'll be fine. And if you have them off and hit rain, you'll be wishing they were on.

I have an 06 with the vented fairings. Never had any problem with the heat. Even when I'm on the parking lot known as IH45 in Houston.

I read a report some time ago that the bike gets better air flow with the lowers on. Air directed towards the motor.

I always have run mine year round, never had a problem.

i keep mine on all year. Seems everytime I took em off. I ran into rain or wet pavement. I also went and made my glove compartments into speaker compartments.

I'd leave them on. I'm adding fairings to my Road King, the vented ones, for more directed air for cooling plus the added storage, and the added help when it rains.

The vents are more for your legs than for engine accomodations... I take my fairings off in the summer here due to extreme heat during daytime riding conditions. When the autumn comes, or we take the bike northwest each fall, we put the fairings back on. It provides good additional protection from bugs, road debris, and rain (somewhat) if we get caught. If we need more air, we just open the vents. In the cool/cold evening rides, the vents get closed and we have the additional wind protection as needed.

If we weren't in this 100 degree / 100% humidity chamber also known as south Texas, I'd probably leave them on all the time.

Leave them on ( Venturi Effect) pushes air through faster (as long as you are moving a reasonable speed).
