Default Need help with road glide windshield install

Hello...
I am having a hell of a time installing the windshields on my road glide. My problem is with the well nuts, they seem to always pop out. I just installed the harley 3 inch over shield and think its great but the well nuts wont stay in. Either this is a really stupid design or im doing something wrong. It seems worse with the taller windshield, ive have no problems with my short ones. Any help or advice would be greatly appretiated.

in changing out several windshields, I found the oem well nuts to be lacking. So I got some longer ones at Ace hardware, they work like a charm, much easier to install also. --Bill

Try this......As soon as the screws engages in the nut, push on the screw while turning. This will expand the length and tighten up better.

when installing the shield you must push the shield against the well nut when tightening, if not they will pop out and you will risk the shield scratching the fairing.

I have "lost" several inside the fairing, now that is not fun. I always keep some extra ones around just for that reason. I think it is a very poor design myself. Didn't think about ACE, I may try theirs. Also, I've seen somewhere on this forum a link to an aftermarket brand that claims to be better. If anyone knows who that might be I'd appreciate a PM. I searched and could not find it.

I've used toogle bolts when in a pinch. The rubber that holds the well nut doesn't hold up well to repeated threading of the screw.

Default Thanks

for the replys. Ive been buying them from home depot, they seem to have been working on the lower shields but on this tall shield they keep popping out. How tight should i be going with them. Has anybody with tall shields had problems with them staying in.
Thanks

The well nuts included with Clearview's shields work much better. Perhaps John would send you a few, in the hope that you might buy one of his shields sometime down the road. Clearview is a HDF sponsor.
