I know oil changes have been talked to death here but I have to ask this. I changed my oil a couple weeks ago and now the bike is making a new noise. Doesn't happen right away, seems it has to warm up first. Ya know the noise it makes in 5th? well, it's like that but louder in 4th, 5th and 6th.
So the question is, can the wrong oil causde it to make godawful sounds?
I know I put the wrong oil in (5w-30 automotive) and will be changing it out as soon as I can, but can the wrong oil really cause it to make noises like that? I've had no difference in handling, performance, clutch, power. Just the noise in the upper gears, maybe b/c I don't ride for long in the lower gears. After riding for a while it is a horrible sound and have no idea if it is cauding damage. I haven't been putting many miles on her until i can get the oil changed again.

Your kidin, right.
If not change the oil to a V-Twin 20w50 now.
Why on earth would you put 5w30 oil in your bike that is spec'd for 20w50????? Yeah, that noise you're hearing could be your motor dying an early death. Foolish move if you're serious.

Easy.. It may be not the correct oil but that certainly doesnt mean its dying.. 5w30 works well in an automobile engine at like 220 degrees . Its still retaining its lubricatiing properties and it works. Just change back to regular h/d dino or syn 3 or amsoil or ........ you should be good. I highly doubt its blowing up..
I would not ride it it one more mile with that oil in it. Change to 20/50 right away. I'm assuming we are talking about the crankcase. You know it has three holes right?
He did not say that he put 5-30 in the engine , he only said he changed MY oil to 5-30 and now it makes more noise. Get a correct service manual for your year/model and change back whatever you did to the recommended viscosity.
