Default Changing out stereo head unit

I don't know anything about this so I need help, can you use any aftermarket stereo head unit as long as it fits into the opening or does it have to meet a certain voltage draw? Also, with aftermarket head units that are XM
/Sirius ready, do you need a tuner to get that to work? If so will the tuner fit in the fairing or do you have to get the Harley tuner? Will the Harley tuner work with an aftermarket stereo head unit? I know allot of questions and they might be stupid ones but I can't figure it out. Any info would help

That is not a stupid question. I too would like to know about satellite radio with an aftermarket radio.

Some day I will want to get rid of my HK unit. But I can't live without satellite radio.
Well I could live without it, but I don't want too.

I went with the Hawgwired install kit, Alpine X100Marine radio and XM module and 6.5" Alpine speakers. Sounds awesome! The XM honestly sounds compressed to me. I have had sirius in my other vehicles and the sound is honestly better on them.

The XM or Sirrus compatable radios use an additional tuner setup. I mounted mine on the top of the radio. I couldn't get adaquate reception inside the faring with the antena so I used the GPS mount plate from ram mount to place it behind my GPS.

Most car/marine stereos can be adapted to work. The Hawg Wired system allows you to adapt almost any stereo to work. The biketronics standard system works with Sony radios but someone posted the other day that they now have another adapter for other radios. So you may want to contact them.

I just installed the Biketronics Sony marine head unit with amp and 51/4" Polk speakers. Also have the XM and everything sounds great.

I noticed this as well. Sounds like crap to me. I really don't even use it much. I stick to MP3's when I am out of local station range. If I had it to do over again I would have spent the extra money on something else.

Biketronics and Hawg-wired offer modules that connect the HD harness to an aftermarket headunit to preserve handlebar controls of the headunit. You have to check their websites to see which headunits their modules are compatible with.

"Satellite ready" headuniits typically require the separate purchase of a tuner. Crutchfield.com has excellent information on features and accessories for headunits, though their pricing is usually retail list prices. But, still an excellent source of information on headunits.
