I did the quick release backrest some time ago, then found chips in my hard bag lids. Seems the release ***** will take a chunk out of your lids if you're not real careful when opening/closing your bags. The ***** should have been tapered to avoid this obvious potential contact point. Attention to detail, MOCO!

LOL!! I'm glad I'm not the only one who had a hell of a time with that install. Took me about 3 hours with all kinds of problems, but in the end I was glad I did it myself.

I had the same issues! Trying to mount the POS backrest pad on the sissy bar upright was a pain in the A**! The instructions suck and what is the deal with all the extra parts!

I am glad I didn't read this until now. I probably would have paid the dealer. Did the detachable back rest today. Dealer installed the detachable tour pack when I bought the bike. I looked at that and it didn't appear too complictaed. Figured the Back rest would be easy. Took my time on the left side, about an hour and a half. Right side about five minutes. Directions were good if you looked at the pictures, reading was too confusing. The bolt issue is messed up. I stripped one side while tourqing it. Hope I dont need to remove the bolt any time soon.

I ques it wsn't that bad. Did highway pegs too. Directions say to put the peg towards the inside of the engine guard. I never could get my feet in there.

if you followed the directions no wonder it was tough....i looked at the end result pic and loosened all bolts so's i could wiggle stuff into place and just winged it...first attempt needed some tweakin...second was right on...bout an hour job

Add me to the list of ones that thought the installation was a pain in the ***. I had to add/remove spacers a couple of times just so that the backrest would easily lock in there without scratching or chipping my hard bags. Needless to say, I'm not removing my backrest any time soon.[:'(]

well, i guess everything lined up just right for you then. i had to get the carbide bits out and fire up the dremel to lengthen some bolt holes. and the stealer didn't give meall the right parts, either.

but hey - it's done, and i have "pride of accomplishment"..........and a couple few hours of labor in my wallet instead of the dealer (at 90 bucks an hour.)

I had to a bit when I read all the stuff you guys wrote about the tough job you had installing the docking kit for the tour pack and backrest. The day after I got my '03 RG .. my son (who was attending the PhD program at the University of Michigan at that time) put them on in my garage in about an hour. As I remember it was pretty hot that day in Southern California in August .. I think I went through 2 beers and a cold bottle of water in my garage easy chair. [:@]

Is that why it's not on your bike in your photo? LOL

Did mine yesterday. Nothing lined up until I loosened the rest. Took a while to figure that out. Instructions sucked. O don't have the Pad yet. It was not in stock, hopefully it will not be too tough.
