Hey guys I have a 08 uc with 12,000 miles. The last 5,000 moles or so I have a strange noise coming from the right side of the bike. It sounds alot like a timing knock sometime one or up to 2 or 3 pings when accelerating in any gear. It doesn't happen all the time. I ran mutiple data runs using TTS and there is no knock. I'm beginning to think I have a lifter colapsing under pressure. I guess it also might be in the primary. Any ideas?
Yea I do get a good bang sometimes when I start it. My hearing is not the best it is possible it's coming from the comp sprocket. Is the any way to confirm a bad sprocket other than pulling primary cover?
The loud bang upon start could be the "normal" sound of the compensator on the 96's. Most have swapped out for the SE compensator. Could be just the comp nut is loose as well. I'd start first by narrowing it down as to which side of the bike it's coming from.

Nope, you can't confirm it even if you look at it-unless it falls apart in your hands. If that was the case it would already be layin in the bottom of the primary case. The stock primary comp seldom breaks, it instead makes lots of clatter on startup and under heavy load.
Stock comp sprockets are known to be way too weak for many of us. They clatter on startup and rattle when we twist the wick at lower speeds in lower gears. HD makes a Screaming Eagle version that really should be stock on all twin cams, but you know how much they enjoy our upgrade money.
I doubt it's a lifter cause it would complain most at start up if collapsed with no oil pressure.
Ok, you can laff at this if you want, but here is one way to locate the noise....Get yourself a mechanics stethoscope and add longer tubes to it, then tape it to the engine cases first one side then the other, and listen as you ride....You can locate the noise easily this way and get closer to a solution sooner.
