I installed a set of these also. Much better quality part then the stock mirror they cover. The plastic stud that's part of the assembly breaks very easily if you're not careful when you secure it to the bike with the metal lock nut. I used a torque wrench but had it set wrong and I immediately snapped the piece off and ruined the mirror. Got a take off mirror from local dealer and was able to get the chrome cover off the broken one with a heat gun. My mistake cost me $20 and a little extra time. Better than buying another set of covers.
Same thing happened to me yesterday!! My torque wrench was set at 25 ft/lb but the stud broke! I was fuming! Unlike you, I'm not going to get another HD fairing mirror. They're junk anyway. All plastic and no possible adjustment of the swivel. One of mine (the one who broke) was loose and there's no way you can tighten them. Typical asian junk.
So I have a set of brand new illuminated chrome covers for sale. They were on the mirrors in the garage for 2hrs. I'll put brand new double sided tape inside the covers and they're good to go.
I ordered the Kuryakyn blind spot mirrors. They're metal and not plastic. Good news is they use the same holes as the HD fairing mirrors.
Anybody interested in the illuminated covers? PM me.
My dad and I just installed these on his 2012 SG today... You are correct, they don't act as running lights. But do you or someone else know if you CAN wire them to act as running lights? Or is it even possible for the LED's to do that? Its not like its a regular bulb... Sorry, I'm pretty new to this stuff... And I feel lame that this is my first post on this forum.. haha But I'd love to see them also work as running lights also!
And the part about drilling the holes for the wires... 1/4 inch drill bit one inch down.... Yea right! might as well go an inch and a HALF down!! lame directions!!
