I just had the 2500 mile service done and now I am up to almost 3300 miles. I am going to ride to Sturgis next month and it will be almost 4000+ miles round trip. The question is should I get the 5000 mile service done now or wait until I get back? It will be almost have 7000 miles on it when I return. I did pay for the prepay service plan, since I am not real good at doing those things myself, and really have no place to do it. With the plan I can get it done at 5000 miles and again at 7500 miles. Any thoughts?
Since its pre-paided, I would stop by the dealer and tell them your leaving on a 4K mile trip and you want all the 5K mile service things checked before you leave
I always service my bike prior to a long trip no matter what the odometer says. Gives me a chance to look things over and I feel better knowing all my fluids are fresh, when spending long days at steady speeds. So my vote is get it done right before you leave.
If you're using synthetic oil I would wait 'til you return. You'll need to change the fluids after the trip anyway, and 5k intervals on engine oil is not excessive with synethic oil, and that's the schedule I've been on for years. The tranny can easily go 10k between changes, and I like to change the primary at 5k even though HD's recommendation on new bikes is 10k.
Thanks for the help. To answer your question, yes it is every 2500 miles, I thought it was suppose to be that way, until I looked in the book. The break down is like this;
It is called "Preferred Service Plus", with that I can call and make appointments for service they will come and pick up the bike on a trailer and bring it back, labor and parts are included, and I can switch to synthetic (Red Line) for no extra charge.
Gotta love the preferred service plan! It was the best money I spent! That is if you actually put donw some miles. I owned my new roadking for about 6 weeks and already got 4500 on it. Im having them service mine prior to going to sturgis also! Recommend doing the service! Have a good ride to STURGIS! May see you up there! PS---RUN SYNTHETICS if you can, just a opinion.
