roadking question
need help, got new pipes for my road king classic (vance and hines big shots) i am confused about the instalation. I am going to bring it in to a HD shop for all labor. I have the bike and pipes in hand. After calling several HD dealer ships, they all have a different price, they all agree that the hiflow kit is needed, and the labor for the pipes install is close. What they are different on is, one says the computer download for fuel injected models is good to go, one says the download doesnt work sometimes, one says use a power commander, one says use a harley race tuner, help?? What it the right thing to do?? I realize you can go several ways, but they have confused me totally. Any ideas
thanks
thanks
I know there are more qualified to answer than me. My experience is that the download is all that is needed. (however that was using SE pipes.) If you use the PC or SERT or other tuner you can get it tweaked better. Most of your shop labor rates around me are 69-72 $ Go for the PC or SERT and Dyno it for the best performance for your ridding habits.

Biggest fraud of all. If you don't touch the air filter and only do the pipes then you only have to install them and go. NO fuel flow change is needed. Any honest Harley tech will tell you that. If your only doing the exhaust put them on and go.
I don't think it's that simple 81! Anytime you change the exhaust (especially to drag pipes), you are changing the performance of the engine dramatically! The rule of thumb is if you going to unrestricted the exhaust, you must also take in more air to balance things out.
At the same time, you are also changing the engine configuration without telling the ECM that you're doing all that. Your result will be an overleaned engine, that produces more heat and possible damages the engine in a fairly short run. That's why people use PCIII or SERT to recalibrate their ECM to reoptimize the engine's timing and fuel mixture.

There is some SOLID advice, just throw on a set of duals, no air kit and expect the bike to run like a dream, no further adjustments required. Hey, even an honest Harley tech will tell ya that. Guess I got scammed, I didn't really want the added performance that comes with the air kit, PCIII and dyno tune. Think I will put on the stock air filter, unplug the PCIII and see how it runs. Ya learn something everyday on HDF![sm=bomb.gif]
Had the dealer do V&H Ovals, S/E Air filter, and they did a 1550 re-map (so they said). Bike runs great.

Now that being said if you are looking for the noise just change pipes if you are looking for performance...do the intake and pipes and get one of the fuel opimizers, however I would still recommend spending the money for the mapping for stage 1 or 2....I have had to many friends whose optimezers fail and their bike were way to lean to ride the 4-500 miles home. Most if not all the after market optimizers will still allow you to go back to the stock map...also allows you to remove if your dealer will void your warranty
PUT THE PIPES ON & RIDE !!!! Save yourself the money of them installing, I personlly put a high flow air cleaner & rejetted my carb myself, ran much better, SOUNDS GREAT! Good luck!
