My RK Custom did not have crash bars around the bags. I replaced the hard leather bags with ABS bags. I thought I would switch back and forth every now and then but I have never put the leather bags back on. They are just setting on a shelf in my garage. Staring at me. Sorta like the money I could be saving by going with Geico.
Bought hardbags, sold leathers and no regrets. Wife hated the leather bags latch system and having to hold the bags open. With the nostalgic rails it's a pain to open them, right in the way. Got the liners and they keep clothes clean and tidy, just grab and go.
