Looking for some advice from the vast knowledge here. I'm going to do a stage 1 upgrade on my 05 RK classic. I've decided on the SE air cleaner kit and the SE performance mufflers. My question regards the HD ECU remap. My plan was to do the remap with the AC and pipes and call it a day. However, some folks have told me that the download still leaves the bike running too lean and I will likely experience decel popping and excessive engine vibration. Recommendations have been to add a power commander or a dfo (digital fuel optimizer). So, for those of you that have done this upgrade, please share your thoughts and experiences on the subject.
I went with the SEIIs on stock pipes, Screamin' Eagle Stage 1 air cleaner and the factory download. The performance increase was very noticable. My fuel mileage stayed at between 43-45 MPG. I get some popping on decel, but I don't think it's indicative of a lean condition. It sounds like a souped up muscle car with headers, and I don't think that's a bad thing.
My HD dealer sponsors a race team and dyno tunes. This is the set up he recommended to me and I'm glad I went with it.
I have a SE air cleaner, performance slip on's and the standard download on my 2005 EG Classic. I do not experience popping or any other indications of a lean condition, and my plugs look good. I have alnost 5,000 miles on it with no problem.
You may want to take a look at using a TFI. It is similar to the HD Race Tuner, but has a little more adjustment to it. The TFI does not send anything to the ECM and no down load is necessary. It basically adjusts the signal going to the injectors to richen the fuel blend of the stock signal.
I've done the 95 inch upgrade but with different exhaust. Tried to get away with just flashing the ECM but there was a lot of detonation so I added a Power Commander. The dealer put the bike on a dyno and adjusted the PC for optimal performance. Still has a little popping going on (mostly on downshifts) but no where near as much as before.
