It is simple amazing that this post would take on such a left or right view, but I guess that’s why this is America; we can. Like the fellow LEO said “Officer Discretion”, Yeah we here the wildest stories and the BS, so trust me we have enough a%^holes out there to summons. So like I said if there is no attitude, or lies then why not. It’s true about six degrees of separation and karma. So the next time you’re at the point lets see how you like it. My brother-in law is a chief trauma surgeon, and he had a similar situation, but I always let he know that when you do see him again you do better. That will stick in that LOE’s mind forever. .

Professional courtesy is just another perk of the job IMO !!! It would take a lot for me to write a cop, firefighter, nurse, doctor, etc. It's a small world and you never know when you may need those people.
I like your philosophy. A year ago (maybe two now) I was travelling "without undue delay" to the hospital in my pickemup. The OR was ready to go with a patient, and I was on my way. Traffic on the Cajon pass heading down the hill was averaging arounf 85 as it usually does that time of broad daylight and no congestion. I was slightly faster at 90. Got pulled over, explained the medical urgency, did not give CHP any attitude or claim not speeding blah blah and yep, you quessed it, ticket for 90 just the same. I had to call the OR and tell them there was going to be a little delay in my arrival. CHP officer couldn't have cared less. In fact, he was relatively rude. I elected just to pay the damn fine and take the traffic school to avoid the insurance notification. I often wondered if I would ever get the pleasure of meeting this guy again in my ER, or in my OR, but, as of yet, no such luck....yet I keep hoping. Someday.... LOL
Thats total crap [sm=dontgetit.gif] I would have given you an escort to the hospital. I wonder what the taillight chaser would have done if the surgery patient was his wife, father, child, mother, etc. Cops like that need to use some common sense and discretion.

I give and receive professional courtesy all the time. I do have blue line identifier stickers on each of my vehicles, that generally only cops have them and know what they mean. I get new ones all the time when I go to the memorial services in DC. Nonetheless, I do try to hide my badge, but make sure the felt flap is visible which is a dead giveaway that there is a badge underneath. I also make it obvious that I am trying to hide it and generally the officer asks. I don't mind when a cop says something like "does it matter that I'm an officer?" but one time I stopped a NYC officer and he was hanging out the window with his badge before I could even get to his car saying "good evening brother" I didn't write him, I just didn't care for the way he flaunted it. When I ride the bike I generally wear my club vest which is a law enforcement only club so most cops that know anything about Harleys usually know which clubs are law enforcement so I'm generally all set there.

Driver's attitude goes along way when I decide whether I give a verbal warning, written warning or citation on a traffic stop.

Rule 1, you write you'r own ticket!
Loose the additude, you do not need to cowl down to an officer
but the minute you treat him like Barney Pfiffe, see rule 1.

Years back when I was on the Fire Dept. and ambulance I got stopped by one of the local leos in my town. I was going 65 in a 55 and when he got to the car he asked me what the hurry was. I told him I was late for call at the Ambulance and asked if I had missed any calls yet. He said no, and then asked if I thought that would get me out of the ticket. I replied no, to which he said good because it won't. I took my ticket and went on. Later that week we had a pretty bad 3 car pile up on the highway and it was a mess. This same guy comes up and asks if I can spare any men to direct traffic for him. I told him no all my guys were busy at the time.(which they were) Later that night the local Chief of police came by the station and asked me what the problem was. I told him I had no prob. The other cop told him I was giving him attittude at the wreck. I told the Chief that all my guys were busy extricating and treating the passengers(one was a van with 6 high schoolers in it the other 2 had a total of 4 people in them) Well the chief excepted that and as we sat around talking one of my guys jokingly asked if I was getting another ticket. I said I hope not. The leo asked about it and when I told him that his Off. had ticketed me he got pretty pi$$ed off and left. Well about 2 days later here they came this young leo was not happy but he apologized and the chief told me not to worry about the ticket. I didn't expect to get out of it but am damned glad I did. Whew!

left the local watering hole about 11:00pm three fridays back.
Local pd has been sitting across street and watching it for last couple years.
This night was HP, but didn't see him.
We rounded corner (gf new subaru baja) on way out of town and home.
followed us about 1/2 mile then lit up.
Said he stopped me because I weaved in the lane farther back (BS), but I said ok.
Went to his car asked if I had been drinking , yep 3 beers since 7:00pm.
Told me I could probably pass with as many as 6.
Passed with under a .045(I just finished the last one before we left)
Gave me a warning ticket for the lane weave.
But did get him to admit real reason he pulled me over was because I came out of the bar rather late and he just assumed I would be drunk.
But nicety and honesty almost always pays off.
