Iron Butt anyone?
The most I have ever ridden in one day is 750 miles and I knew that I was endangering not only myself but others. Tiredness, fatigue - yes they are different, dehydration, sunburnt face and most important a loss of concentration was just some of my symptoms.
I have heard and read of other riders; whom when doing on of these rides, pull up to a stop sign and forget to put their foot down. Sounds silly but unless you have been there....
I am convinced that you have to plan and prepare much like some of the other riders have suggested. To just hop on your scoot and attempt to do 1K in a day is just plan stupid.

Of course you have to plan. That is part of the process and is fun.
The whole point to any IBA ride is to do the distance safely. You should know your abilities and know when to stop. Folks here have suggested stopping every 100 miles. For the first 500 miles, I tried to only stop for gas. That gave me a bit more time for stops in the second 500 miles.
I take Advil before starting and when finished. Sometimes in the middle if I remember. Some say, "No coffee", but I like my cup-o-joe and had a few on the way. I drank water, but just enough to stay hydrated. I didn't want to stop to pee every 50 miles.
Pack stuff for every possible weather condition you might encounter, but be sure you have room for it all. When I left Atlanta on my last one it was 29 degrees, but when I got to Miami it was almost 80 and I was sitting in traffic. I didn't have a place to put my leather jacket and I roasted.
If you normally have a sore neck, back, hands, or whatever after a 300 mile round trip, try to figure out what is causing it and fix it and test it prior to doing an IBA ride. It'll only get worse.
