If it is stock, it came with a catridge. Aside from taking it apart, you can't tell.

Yes. But if you do that you might as well take both of his 06 forks and use them.

thanks dawg
ok hard decision now. since i am taking my forks to an indy to change the fluid out, do i buy the '06 forks and have them switch them out so i have 2 conventional style forks.
they will need to pull the pistons out of my '05 and place them into the lower casing of the '06.

If it were me, I would go with the 06 forks if you have a chance to get them cheap from a bud. If both sides are conventional, it's a lot easier to do fluid changes and you should be able to change your fluid yourself next time, if it was the cartridge that was preventing your doing it this time.

dawg thanks again i just called my buddy and he willing to sell me the forks. just need to find a price. any ideas on how much he should them for?
