Default I may not be asking the question correctly

My '03 Ultra Classic does not have any security system. I asked the question "Is there any alternatives to paying the $100.00 to have the dealer program the security system"

I think I understood that I can do it myself but someone else said absolutely not because it requires software in a computer to establish parameters for the newly installed security system to work.

If I misunderstood something please let me know.

I can afford the security system but I can't afford the extra $100.00 to have it programed.

Thanks for the feedback and I realize that it says "program per instructions" but, is the Harley Service Department lying?

I don't mean to open a can of worms here but the service manager flat a$$ told straight up, that even if I installed my own system it would still need to be programed by them and it takes about 1-1/2 hours. I understand Harley Dealers are out to make as much money as they can but this is out and out lying about it in my book.

Is there some differences on how the system work after the Harley dealer programs the security system and if I do it myself?

lying is one of the courses in P.A.C.E. (HD's fancy certification program stands for Parts, Accessories, Clothing Expert)

No difference in how the system works no matter who installs and programs it.

If it takes them an hour and a half just to do the programming then there is something seriously wrong with the tech.

I installed and programmed my 06 Ultra TSSM and Smart Siren II. It takes 30 minutes to teach the ECM the password (do not confuse with your personal code) of the new TSSM as is published in the DIY section. You can then spend as much time as you want setting other options for the system.

Now, that being said, I do not know if you can use that procedure as your bike is an 03 and may be of the older vintage that requires the use of the HD Scanalyzer instead of the newer HD Digital Tech.

You will only be able to tell by checking the Service Manual for the 03 Touring line.

I had the local dealer install and program the TSSM and Smart Siren II on my 03 Heritage Classic because it is of the older type that uses the Scanalyzer. Install and programming 1 hour labor.

You will not be able to start the engine until someone teaches the bike the password for the new TSSM. That is to prevent someone from swapping out the TSSM and riding off with your bike.

My Touring Model Harley Davidson Service Manual only has a section on the turn signal/ security model replacement. There is nothing in this manual about the security system.

I guess I'll have to let the dealer program it. DARN IT!

See what the Electrical Diagnostics manual has to say first.
