As others have noted, I too use the tach quite a bit to make sure I am keeping my new bike between 2 and 3 thousand rpm. Having previously ridden shovel head bikes, my previous riding habits would be considered "lugging" on the twin cam versions.

Softails don't have tachs.

Added a tach so I COULD get a read on the engine. It's a safety habit thing.

sometimes i'll use mine to determine what gear i am in, and in certain situations just how aggressively i can downshift.

I'd rather have a Tach than a Speedo. Cause wearing a speedo is just ...

added a tach, essential to tell when a carb bike is properly warm, also i look at it 10 times more than the speedo.

I don't know, after having the EGC for 4-5 months now, I swear the tach screws me up more than it helps. After years of riding sport quads and my Shadow with out a tach, I just shifted by sound and feel. Everything was fine. I still do the same with the EGC, then find myself looking at the tach and second-guessing "should I upshift, downshift, what to do, maybe put tape over this damn thing"
