I brought my 2009 Road king new back in Oct of '08. I put the first 6k on it by May of this year, around the same time I noticed a slight knock like something was hitting the frame of the bike after i hit a bump after the first rebound of the rear shocks. So i though it was the shocks. After the fourth visit(HD replaced only one shock due to leaking) the problem was still there. So i started checking every bolt on the bike. To make this short, I decided to lube up the steering head bearings and noticed that it took almost a half of a full sized tube of grease in order to get the lube to show out of the top and the bottom of the bearing. I figured this was odd so off to HD I went, I specifically had them check the steering head bearings and they were bad due to lack of lubrication. They changed them free of charge, and the bike is tight and good as new. So if you havent checked the bearings yet, do it like yesterday, or at least before the warranty expires.
When you grease the neck bearings for the first time, it will take almost a tube of grease, over time it runs out and splatters over the front of the engine and on the lower tank when it gets hot. Need to inspect and clean the excessive grease out of the fork area from time to time.

Steve
Thats what I was thinking at first but I had a '06 Softail that use to splatter grease all over on the front of the tank, jacket, and even my jeans. This bike had no grease to smear on anything, I think they forgot to load it at my 1K service.
Ok load up a new tube of grease and connect to the zirk fitting and pump, but only grease around the fitting. Hold the tube and female fitting tighter but still no grease at either end of the neck - what am I doing wrong???

Not sure what type of grease gun your using. Sometimes you have to spin the tip of the grease gun fitting clockwise to lock it down onto the grease fitting, be sure if you have this type to turn it counterclockwise before removal cause you could break the grease fitting if you force it off.

Keep squeezing. The bearings are greased at the factory before they are installed. The first time they are greased thru the grease fitting the entire neck area has to fill with grease before before any of it will pass thru the bearing and seal so that you can see it
