Question Windshield Screw Insert Question

I was getting ready to head over to the parents house for Thanksgiving dinner when I noticed the left side of the windshield was loose.

Upon further investigation I noticed that the brass well nut had completely separated from the inner faring. I tried to push the well nut back in but once I tighten the screw it just pop's right back out again.

I've searched and read the posts about the new replacement inserts P/N 16585-96 but was wondering if this will fix the problem since it appearers that the current insert has nothing to hold on to, to keep it in place.

Thanks in advance and I hope everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving.

Yes, the replacement is threaded in, no problems. Much better than the original.

The insert's will fix Your problem. I had the same problem on My 08UC. A buddy of mine recommended using a little (very little) silicone on the bolt threads. I did so and torqued the bolts to 22 in lbs. That was over 1-1/2 years ago and never had a problem with the bolts coming loose again.

The replacements are far better than the originals. Have seen the dealer repair originals by heating and pushing back in. Don't know how permanent this fix is though.

I had mine done at the dealer not once but twice they put them in backwards the first time. the kit comes with three brass ferrule the slots go in first not out towards the windshield and there is a install tool to put them in. some guys on the forum have used the wind shield screw to install also. the slot cuts the threads in the plastic be carefull if you try yourself, make you start them in straight.

The most important thing to remember about the Well Nuts used is NOT to over tighten them. If you do, you will separate the brass threads from the rubber. This makes the useless.

I replaced all three on my 07 ultra. The slot is NOT for a screw driver. The slot goes into the fairing first. Do not use blue loctite, it is not made for plastic!
The installation of these inserts is simple. Use your regular windshield screw and a torx screwdriver. They screw in easy!

I used the slots with a flathead Screwdriver screwed them in until one of the tabs broke then broke the other tab off and been fine since.
