I am one of those guys that use his lighter quite a bit. I did just discover why the MoCo says not to plug other stuff into the lighter socket recently. The lighter socket on the ultra is slightly smaller then in a car. I plugged a Tom Tom into the bike for a trip to meet some Marines for a toy run at a park that I had never been to. This stretched out the socket and now the lighter is extremely loose. I also discovered that the Tom Tom plug limits the turn to the left. In a reaction at low speed I rammed the plug into the tank trying to get to the full turn to avoid a car that was backing into in a parking lot. In doing this it somehow shorted out momentarily and blew a fuse. Simple to replace and all that. Works great now except that I lost my lighter going down the road because the socket is too loose.
Anyone know how to get the socket tight again or is it like a woman, once its stretched out it will never get tight again
I added a "supplemental 12V power point" 91843-97 in my tour pak. Wired it directly to the battery with an inline fuse. I use it for charging the cell phone, charging the ipod. Mounted it at the right rear speaker box inside the tour pak.
The reason you're not recommended to use the lighter as a power source is exactly that. Stretches the socket which relies on friction to hold the lighter after it pops. Also, some power cords don't mate well with the lighter port and fail to make good contact in the first place.
Only solution is to install a separate power port or convert the lighter port to the accessory power port with the cap. If you need the lighter and your power cord hits the tank then install the auxillary power port. They make some nice chrome ones for the handlebars or you can drill a hole and flush mount the Harley one.
You bent the socket. there is a piece in there that with a flat tip or knife you can bend back out and your lighter will work again without being loose.
Glad I have the FIXXED FAIRING,I don't worry about dinging my tank when turning. I too used mine for the Tom Tom XL on a 3000mi trip and I have not noticed any stretching of the socket. I still use my lighter daily as I am a smoker and it still works great.
