There is a small contact switch that is easy to damage if you don't put a piece of cardboard in. If you mess up this you will not have a rear brake light when using the front brake lever after you get it back together.

I'm not sure of the year of bike, but I didn't have to remove anything from the brake side to remove the inner fairing. I wouldn't risk damaging that switch if I didn't have to.

Just completed the job:

1. Unmount and mount everything to the inner fairing while it is off. I removed the entire inner fairing with fairing brackets, radio, guages still attached. I reattached everything and installed it back in as a whole unit.

2. Dont be surprised if the fairing brackets and/or speaker brackets are broke. If they are and you are still under warranty, just put it back together with broken brackets and take it to the dealer as a warranty issue. Both brackets and 1 speaker bracket was broke....have appt Saturday for dealer to replace.

3. Another set of hands sure does help.

4. As already mentioned, service manual and take pictures. Watch the wire colors on which color goes on which side on the connection.

5. Take your time, drink beer, and have fun

How much did it cost to get the pieces painted? I have a warranty exchange inner fairing coming my way so the dealer gets to do all the swap out labor. Figure I could get it painted before swapping . . .

Yeah - I thought about that. Actually the warrantied part is 58497-08A and runs about $167 list. The vivid black paint set is $529.95. If I got the job done for the difference ($530 - $167) that would still be $363 and I don't know if the dealership can swing that deal - although that would be no different than selling me the painted fairing at about cost.

Of course there's the other part of the inner fairing that isn't included and isn't damaged that still would need to be painted if I used stock parts rather than the factory painted parts.

I'd have thought that a good paint shop doing vivid black and clear coat wouldn't cost more than $250 . . . but perhaps that's optimistic.
