Maybe it's the flare, not sure. Love the look of the 3.5 and it works well too. The 6.5 is really good for long trips. Cuts down on the sound for music and no wind in the face. Nope, they're not cheap but I think they're a great buy.
The "no worse than stock" is for the 3.5. Basically, I don't have an issue with the 4" stock. So I was worried at first that going down half and inch would create an issue that wasn't there before. No problem, I still had no issues with buffeting so I was happy. Had a better looking windshield in the 3.5 for everyday rides and (smaller, flare shaped, blacked out) and the 6.5 for days I know I'll be on the highway for longer periods.
Do you have any pictures of it on your bike? And how tall are you? I am 6'3'' and put on the 6.5. Didn't like it, I thought I was a bit tall for it, and the 10.5 just doesn't look right.

Do you know if the 8-1/2 will also keep the buffeting from the passenger?
Depending on where the passenger sits compared to you she should be just fine. If she's sitting 3-4" above you she might feel more buffeting than the rider. If she looks at the back of your head (or sits even or close to even with you) she should be just fine.

I'm 6'1" and the 6.5" works for me. I have tried the 8.5" and I literally felt no buffeting behind it. I would think that you being only 2 inches taller than me that it should work great for you as well.
