Default ignition switch removal

I am about to change out my fork oil on my '09 Ultra
and was wondering if there is anything special I need
to know about removing the ignition switch or not?
Is there a spring that will pop out or anything out of
the ordinary I need to know about? Is special tools
required for anything or will normal hand tools
do the job? Just want to know before I get to it.

Do you have a service manual? Pretty darn good instructions in there. No special tools needed.

I need to get one of those HD alignment tools........
I've pulled my ignition switch dozens of times without one, but every
once and awhile I've bumped my frontend to the left and it went into lock mode.
I've just inserted the the switch post to unlock it.....but it's pain in the ***.

A flat blade screwdriver will also work.

Actually I think you can push in button on bottom of ignition switch tuen the key all the way to left and pull it right off. But be careful not to get it out of wack or you will have to make a tool and dont ask me how I know.

I just did the forks on mt 09 SG yesterday. I took pictures of the whole thing step by step and plan on doing a write up soon. For now, here are a few pics to help you out. You dont need the HD tool. You can use the switch or a screw driver to move the two (one white, one black) cams to the "off" and it will unlock the forks. These are some pics of whats under the switch.

Here's the order they come out and go in.

If you need any other pics or advise, dont hesitate to ask. I also have some photos of very effective and cheap tools I made to make the job easier.

+1 on that, and works quite well. Best part, who of us doesn't already have a plain ole large flat blade screwdriver. I think mine is one of those special screwdrivers because it works equally well Right or Left handed!

(I actually met somebody years ago who fell for that one. Not quite blonde, but close enough. Sad!)

After you price the alignment tools you will decide that a screwdiver will work just fine. But you should be able to remove and reinstall switch without using alignment tool or screwdriver. If you decide you want to but the alignment tool, you can find a J&P cycle as most dealers do not carry or sell this tool.

Great pics on removel. I pulled my forks last weekend to powder coat the lowers. Removing the switch is a breeze with a small screwdriver.

Never had a prob taking it out but then you have to unlock the steering to do the work, had some trouble getting it lined back up to install the switch. Got it but it can be a pain
