Default Odd Knocking

I have an 02 EGC with 95" engine, 203 cams, Reinhardt true duals & 2007 SE mufflers (quiet!) & 45,000 miles. I use Amsoil lubricants.
One of the things I wanted checked out at the 45,000 service was a knocking that is loudest on start-up then quiets down, like a dry lifter (but, it's not). What is odd is that, as engine speed increases, the knocking continues at the same speed [i.e., does not increase in speed as engine speed increases], but it gets louder.
My mechanic does not want to do a blind tearing into my engine, nor do I. So, do any of you have an idea where I should look?
Any help is appreciated!

mmm, something in the tourpack or fairing?

Is it definitely coming from the engine? Hard to imagine an engine knock that doesnt follow rpm....

Don't have a gremlin bell do ya????

Sorry, couldn't help that. Again, are you sure it is from the motor? I know my hard bags rattle sometimes and have been struggling with that for almost 2 years. I am not that much of a wrench and if I get into a motor I might have it running when I am done but can count on a few spare parts.... Best of luck and be sure to let us know what you find out the problem is.

You should narrow it down to what side of the bike it is coming from. If it is the primary side, check your comp nut as they had a tendency to come loose back on the bikes that were using nuts and not bolts like on the TC96's. There is a revised torque procedure and also a shim you can use or grind it down to catch better, etc. Are you using adjustable pushrods or stock pushrods in the engine?

I would get a UOA done and go from there.

Road Dog: I have adjustable pushrods installed when I replaced my lifters [& INAs for Torringtons] at 38,000 miles. When this rain Nor Cal is having stopps, I'll get my bike out & put my stethescope to it.

NoCarb: I hate to reveal my ignorance, but what is a "UOA"?

STRTArrow: I'm bleeding all over the floor. No, I don't have a Gremlin bell. If I had one, there are days it would have to be the size of those in the Notre Dame Cathedral.

KingKingKing: Yes, there is a noise that doesn't follow engine RPM. If I'm right, you'll hear me moan all the way from here. Kinda like Krakatoa . . .

Keep those cards & letters coming, folks. I still need some ideas . . . I'll update you-all on Road Dawg's suggestions Wednesday or Thursday.

UOA is an oil analysis where you send it off to a lab. Which adjustable p-rods do you have? If they are the original SE's, they have been known to rub on the covers at the top. Doesn't make a real loud knocking noise, but it can make a thumping noise. You could clearance the tubes or put in tapers. Also, check that the jam nuts didn't possibly come loose on one of the rods. Rocker end play can make a noise. I still would narrow down which side of the bike it is and check the comp nut.

Since it does not change with the RPMs, check the clutch assembly/tranny shaft.
