The lowers made a significant difference. I, too, don't like to look thru a windscreen, so the short detachable is perfect -- I can see the ground from approx. 20' in front of the bike and the bugs & wind go over my head. Most of the obnoxious buffeting comes from below the screen -- I have a Jackflaps vest that I sometimes use (it works), but I don't like wearing the extra vest when it's warm. The chrome lowers virtually eliminated all the buffeting on my HJC Symax flip-up. At first, I wasn't crazy about the look, but I've learned to like it, as well. Once I put them on, I seldom take them (and the screen) off, unless I'm just putting around the 'hood. (I'll probalby keep them on until around a couple of miles outside of Sturgis!)
I ride a Deuce with short HD compact windshield and an Ultra with 9.5" windshield. I use an Arai Corsair R7 fullface helmet and am very comfortable on both bikes.
