Default Elevation limitations and cures?

I'd like to ask about mountain riding.

I've got a '94 FLHTC and we're aimed at Colorado come summer.

At what elevation am I going to have carburator trouble?

What cures are available?

Thanks in advance,

e.r.

When I was in Colorado we'd get guys coming up from low elevations all the time only to find out how far off thier jetting was. Usually they were blubbering rich because they were rich to begin with. Good place to start is to make sure its right for where you are then when you get to elevation you should be OK with just some loss of power. The passes run from 9000 to 14000 feet, even jetted right for 6-7000 feet your gonna feel power loss on the high passes. If your still running the CV a 45 pilot and 1 7/8 to 2-1/8 turns out on the mixture screw is a good place to start. A little adjustment there when you get high will keep you going.

I have never had a problem there coming from about 700' in Texas. As already mentioned you will have some (minor) loss of power at the highest elevations and may have too low an idle but generally no problem. I rode there with two carb'd bikes, a shovel and an evo. The evo once with the CV carb and other times with an S&S. Newer FI bike, no problem at all.

CV carbs adjust pretty well. As stated earlier, if you're jetted properly for where you live you won't have a problem. You will notice a loss of power however at the higher elevations.

I agree with the above comments. With a carbed bike, expect to notice a minor power loss, but nothing more. There are no problems significant enough to justify tinkering with your jetting for a brief trip.
