Default rotors?

Hey guys. I took my front rotors of my 09 classic to get polished and the guy tells me there not stainless but some type of steel. I know some guys get them done so can someone set me straight.

My 08 rotors polished up like chrome. Can't tell any difference from the chrome on the lower legs. Not sure what alloy they are but they look great after I spent LOTS of time doing the buffing.

I polished mine also. Took forever to get the fine sanding scratches out. But looks great, I believe they are stainless but what grade, I have no idea.

what are you guys doing to them to keep the polished look for a while? coating them with something or just waxing the hell out of the are where the shoes dont contact. Curious as i have two new rotors for my dyna i have not put on yet and may have to do some polishing if it last for a while.

High carbon steel would rust just breathing on them. They are stainless steel and probably the 400 series stainless, which means if you put a magnet on them it would stick because they do have some other alloys in them. Any 300 series stainless steel a magnet will not stick and they have more chromium in them. The 400 series is all that's needed to prevent rusting.

There is no need to do anything to them once they are polished. They will stay shiny for nearly ever. I polished my stock rotors nearly 10 years ago. They are still shiny.....I have a factory polished Colt pistol that I bought 20 years ago. It still shines like a mirror.

What are you guys using to polish them? you doing it by hand or with a die grinder and some type of pcs on the die grinder. I have different disk for my die grinder that are like scotch bite material or are you guys just using fine sandpaper and your hand.

I started with my D/A sander and some 80 grit. A vibrating sander for wood working would also work.. After the 80 i moved up to 150 then 220 then 320 then I hand wet sanded with 400 1000 and 1500. Then I got out my buffer for paint and body work and used some compound and buffed the hell out of them..I still have sand scratches them but they shine nice and look good.. Hell its winter and was last winter when I did mine so take your time and work em over and you will be impressed .. I lost my job shortly before I did mine so it also gave me something to do .. Ive got a lot more time than money ..
