camping road trip
My husband Dan and I are planning a road trip with our bikes, his is a 2006 Road King Classic and mine is a 2006 Sportster 1200L.
He has sidebags and a luggage rack, I have only a small 4 rail rack and a solo seat.
What I am looking for are suggestions on gear that won't bog us down, I need to bring a tent and some type of small mattress or pad, a blanket or bag clothing for fri sat sun and bathing stuff, we like to have coffee first thing in the am but food we can get on the road.
We hope to ride out friday then camp about 3 hours away, pack up sat morning and ride another 3 hours to camp, set up and ride all day around that area, have dinner out, sleep and then pack up sunday, giving us a long ride back, but abreak inbetween for dinner.
Any and all suggestions are appreciated. I love following him although I only like to do the speed limit, his 65-70 is different than my 65-70.
I would also suggest a small coffee pot (perc) and a single burner that attaches to a gas bottle (stove link)
With some tight packing, you should be able to get everything on both bikes.
Have a great trip!
Know what you mean about the speed. Much nicer to go slower and enjoy the view!
I have a Napier X-Treme Sportz Pac. A little more roomy that the Sportz Pac. It sleeps 2, has 2 sleeping bags and stools and is very compact. Got mine off Amazon in a few days. Here's a link that has both. http://www.vtarmynavy.com/Napier_sports_pac_tents.htm
As for Coffee. I have an inverter but use a small 12 VDC coil heater. My Ultra has a Cigarette Lighter. The single burner Bradteed mentioned is better and faster. Depends on room. I go for weeks at a time and have no problem. I roll my clothes instead of folding. Also buy shirts on the way. I have a cargo net for any overflow.
I'm heading to California in a few hours and am packed tight. I don't carry tools. I have Hog, AAA and a cell phone!
I'll be camping at Sturgis, coming and going!
Have a great trip!
If you have an REI http://www.rei.com/ store near you, go check it out. It makes it a lot easier when you can see and touch the equipment. The one in my area services a lot of "extreme" hikers and climbers, these guys pack weeks worth of food clothes and equipment into a small backpack. This kind of equipment is very small and efficient
REI has everything you would need.
