Might help if you told us what part you're talkin' about. Quality stainless can be polished to look like chrome. I have a coil cover that was welded up out of stainless. I took some time fine sanding & polishing about 15 years ago, & most people think it's chrome today.
I'm making a new licence plate bracket in 2 pieces. couldn't find a good piece of flat 1/8 plate but have it in stainless, so one is steel the outher stainless so thinking of chroming both.

Yes - stainless steel can be plated. Results may vary depending upon the type of stainless and the process used. I suggest you consult a good chroming company. If you lived in this area I'd suggest Queen City Plating. http://www.queencityplating.com/Index.html.
Badpiggy - before you say it can't be done one more time (and no offense meant - we can't all be right all of the time):
OP - given the size of what you're plating I'd give Queen City a call as it'd be easy to ship - they're really good and do a great deal of work for the car collectors in this area. If you're unfamiliar with the Puget Sound area this is a hot bed of custom and historic car collection.

Actually Stainless can be chromed, westin nerf bars, made a upgrade on them of chromed stainless, but a good polisher will get SS to look like chrome as noted by others
