I installed a stage 1 air cleaner about a year ago and haven't touched it since. I took the football air cleaner cover off last night and found substantial rust developing on the inside, particularly on both ends of the cover. So it's definitely a good idea to put a light coating of oil on it to keep rust away, and to check it every so often.
Seriously, it sounds like you might have a bad Framous valve.

Back to some of the earlier posts - K&N makes a filter that fits. One of our local dealers will throw togetehr a stage 1 kit for you with all the right parts and a K&N for roughly the same price as the official H-D Stage 1 A/C.

Twin Rider, I think once a year should be fine if you don't live on dirt roads or anything. He!! if you ride in town/highway, I can't imagine having to check it more than annually. I don't think your neglecting your scoot at all IMHO.
Now, if it was an oiled filter, then maybe, I personally do NOT like any of the oiled filters on a street vehicle. I think a good filtering paper one works fine. I have a huge baldwin home made open element on my Powerstroke. My Blackstone reports come back great on silicon readings.

JimTJr,

Good to hear from a fellow aviation nut. I'm an aero engineer here in Texas. I, too, dislike oiled filters, especially with FI engines. It's good to know the stage 1 air filter is washable and not oiled. I'll have to check for rust on the bracket when I remove the football cover.

On a lighter note, it is funny to know most of the people that give others grief around here run to the dealer anytime their bike has a loose bolt, accessorize their bikes and apparel like some tween in the mall, and only ride when it's sunny and over 70 degrees.
