Doc, nice post. I agree completely with your take on the flimsiness of the Voyager's dash and bags. The bike looks good at a distance, but give it a good close look and you will run away.

One thing that I like about the Kaw that HD does not have is LED's that light up indicating what gear you are in. HD does not do that on their bikes other than the "6th" gear which lites up, but that's all. That would be a nice functional feature to have.

Even the members of the Voyager association are reservrd about the 'new' Voyager. We had a very nice touring motorcycle and then Ma Kaw stopped production for a few years to come out with a blatant HD copy. It was nothing like what the original Voyager owners asked from the company when we were polled about the next generation. The new one is just a Vulcan with a bunch of plastic added on that doesn't match front to rear. Oh well, that's why I have an Ultra now that I sold my Voyager XII. I did a comparo of the Ultra vs the V XII on the Voyager board. Both bikes won in differant catagories, but overall cost not factored, the HD just edged out the Kaw.

I saw one up close, and without ridig it can say that it looks like a comfy ride. You could probably go all day on it. Yeah, like most metric bikes, a lot more cheap plasitc is used. I know, I had KAW and a Honda b4 the Harley. The advantage, let's face it, the engines are pretty much trouble free and require a lot less intensive maintanance. The disadvantage, cheaper parts and less resale value, and I don't care what you do to em, the coolness factor is never what a Harley can be.

The more I look at it the less it looks like a copy.
The fairing looks a lot like the fairing from the Late70s early 80s police bikes (especially the lights). The rounded bags and hump back trunk are also quite different. The Kawasaki dash has a nice modern look to it as well.
To some guys anything with 2 wheels and a seat is a Harley clone.

It looks ok, from a distance. The problem is, ya cant get far enough away from it to make it look really good.

I don't understand when people say intensive maintenance on a HD. Maybe I've been lucky. The only Maint. I've done on my Harley's is regular Oil changes. But I don't do anything to the engines except AF and Pipes.

That too! We have a couple we ride with occasionally. He has a Yamaha Venture and his wife rides a Kaw Intruder. They both have aftermarket Pipes trying to make that sound, But no way!! Not even close to a Harley.

Kaw has been working on this bike for a couple years because I participated in a survey while at bike week one year. I have owned 2 Nomads and they were rock solid bikes. This new V-Twin they are using is a strong engine for sure and I predict it will do fine. Our dealer here cant keep them on the floor. It's all in what you like, thats why there's all these differant brands.
