My thought is to buy a basket case, probably a wreck and to build a bagger of my own accord. Anyone else perform this and not get their desired effect or wound up with a real good looker bad to ride mess?
Money is going to get spent, I am aware this will be an expense but I am tiring of buying a look that isn't what I want and spending too much to get there to start to put anymore in.
If you buy a wreck / salvage title, and at some point you choose to sell it, it 'may' be more difficult to do so
You will need to ensure that what you do buy is in decent enough shape that it 'can' be made roadworthy and legal (not passing inspection after all the time and $ spent would really suck!)
If you have the financial ability, this may be the best route for you to achieve the desired look, power and 'miles of smiles' factor!! Whatever you do, make sure you do as much research as you can before you purchase, so that you are not wasting money buying things multiple times.
Sounds like a fun project and not much different from building a hot rod (auto).Buy a non-salvage wreck, add maybe an aftermarket chassis, wheels, etc., and you'll have something nobody else has along with the pride of doing it yourself (if you do it yourself). Go for it.
Engine up to size/power for my satisfaction, color to my preference, chrome and add-ons that I cannot currently do with the cost of the ride as bought; recovery of expense is a far thought but recovering more of it than less after time would be a satisfier.
Being able to mod existing components without the guilt trip of cutting into high dollars or throwing good dollars to the wind; replacing the damaged components with different pattern or quality or design or even constructing my own(machinist).
The CD title would be a detractor, a salvage only would stop a deal.
I have done that a couple of times and the salvage titile is not a issue at all. My current bike has a salvage title and it has not affected the value at all.
Go for it. I built a basket case Triumph between 99 and 01. Loved it. I'd do it all over again if I had the space and the time to work on it. Never built a Harley, but I wouldn't let that stop me from doing it.
