Badge history
There's a whole history and lineage with the badges and decals over the years. Most are model and period specific. An interesting link:

You'll see a lot of folks using the early sixties badges for that "old school" look. If you get to know your badges and engine models, you can almost nail the year of the bike just by looking at those two things, at least for the FLs.
