unless you want to take the chance of getting hurt because of handling irregularities...follow the procedures in the service manual for this. Also check for any tech bulletins where the swing away test has been modified since the printing of the service manual.
the Steering Head bearings are the only link between the front and rear of the motorcycle. your life could depend on proper adjustment.
Thanks guys, before I posted I read the (fall away) method, but felt there was a more practical way of doin the check. If one side of your handle bars weighs more than the other(I-pod holder, brake resevoir on one side, not the other, for example), it is naturally gonna fall to that side, with modern tech know how, I think there would be a better way.I like the idea of grabbing the forks and checking for slop. JMO... Thanks again.
There is a more practicle way, run it down the road, get to 50 mph and let go of the bars but keep your hands close to the grips, as you deccell from 50 down to 30 it should stay steady. If it starts to wobble the bars back and forth it is loose!
Always final check with the fall away meathod though, new spec is stopping in the 4th swing, old was in the 3rd. I like to set mine to stop at the end of the 2nd swing!
