I didn't find much of a difference for me as rider between the SG seat and RG seat sitting on them at the dealership. I didn't ride the bike with the SG seat; my bike had the RG seat on it already at the dealership. I went with the RG seat, as you said, because it has a bigger, more comfortable seating area for a passenger. My wife rides with me, so when she's happy.... I'm happy.
.
The '09's and earlier RG seats are beefier than the stock '10 SG and "10 RG seats (which are the same).
In my opinion the newer seats are almost as hard as the badlanders.
I bought an 08 RG seat last year and promptly sent it off to MCC for some good foam buildup in both the rider and passenger area. It was worth the effort, especially for the passenger as you are correct, the passenger pad is much wider and thicker than the 08 & up SG seats. Of course depending on how much you can get the RG seat for may push you into the realm of a custom like Corbin or mustang or CC. I was lucky and didn't pay that much for mine on Ebay but I have seen others trying to sell for much more and that may be a determining factor in your choice. I had a post a few days ago that has pictures of the two seats together. You might do a search to see.
Stock Road Glide seat is one of the most comfortable stock seats IMO. And it is more narrow in the nose than the SG seat which gives you better footing. I ran one on my 08 Street Glide and my 09 EG Classic. Just make sure you get an 08. The 09-10 will fit but they made changes to them that completely ruined the comfort. Less padding and wider pan to be more specific.
Here is a comparison shot of the two that I took on my 08 SG.
I am going to get me a Road Glide seat but all the ones I am finding are the annaversery ones with the tan in the middle. If I got one of these do you think that MCC could change that out? It dosn't go with the theam of my bike. My plan is to get it, then send it off to MCC for some memory foam.
A Seat that people overlook is the Electra Glide STANDARD seat,,, Go to the Harley web page and look at the 09's and you will see the STANDARD is just a little bigger than the Road Glide seat,,,I have one on my 09 Street Glide

I changed my 08SG seat for a 09' Screamin Eagle Road Glide seat ( SERG ). Passenger portion is wider , drivers portion is lower, a tick narrower in the front and for sure more comfortable.
My friend just changed his on a 06 SG to the Screamin Eagle seat from the 05 SE Electra Glide....it fits great, looks to be a good change for his bike, same positive changes as the 09 SERG seat was to my bike.
My BIL has a 05 SE Electra and he really likes his seat, and he be'oches about everything, lol.. so it has to be a good one.
i'm using an 09 roadglide seat on my 08 streetglide, and it's great. and if you look from the rear of the bike, the stitching even matches up with the lines of the tank console. it's by far the most comfortable seat i've ever had on any of my harleys. i got mine from a forum member in the classifieds section here. one of the best improvements i've made so far to my bike.
