Default Different tires on front and rear?

Is it ok, safe, etc., to use a different model tire on the front than the rear and vice versa? Of course both will be either bias ply or radial, but I'm talking about a different tread design being used on the front as opposed to the rear tire. For example, I want to run the new Dunlop Amercian Elite on the front and continue using the Dunlop 407 on the rear (both are bias ply tires.)
