put on oil cooler and oil temp gauge in place of air temp gauge now today when riding the oil temp gauge go to 180 then jumps to230 then back down to 180 it is about 50 deg out side when i was riding Help please
Does your oil cooler have a thermostat, if so it may be that it's at just the right temp to be cycling open & closed, the thermostat is supposed to stay closed so oil gets hot enough to burn off moisture in the oil.
My service manager talked me out of the oil cooler/gauge. He said all you will be doing is worrying about the oil temp. Put the air temp gauge back in and ride that sucker.

Bogus, I have an oil temp gauge and find it very handy. Comforting to always know what temp my oil is running at. And I ride the sucker a lot.
You may want to check your wire connections on the back of the gauge. What your describing could possibly be caused by a loose connection. Best of luck.
I've got a Jagg 6 row Deluxe with the thermostat and the Wallys Cycle oil guage and I don't see any erratic guage reaction when the thermostat cycles. In fact it only seems to cycle once at warm up as it allows the oil to get up to just past 220'F or so, and then it cools down to operating temp and stays about rock solid at ~200'F, during cruising.
It might get up to 230'F again if I hit heavy traffic on a hot day, but then it doesn't get much above that and cools down immediately once rolling.
But there's no jumpy erratic temp changes.

I have both the oil temp gauge and the h-d oil cooler on my 09 SG.
I installed the oil temp gauge last year. When running on the highway at 70mph+ the oil temp would creep up to about 230'F and take a while to cool down to around 190-210'F off the highway. If I was sitting in traffic the oil temp would climb back up to around 220-235'F and not cool down until I had been riding for a good 10-15 minutes.
Now that I have installed the h-d oil cooler, my oil temp stays at 185'F on the highway running 70mph+. Sitting in traffic the oil temp will creep up to around 220'F but as soon as I start moving it drops back to 185'F pretty quick.
All in all I would say the oil cooler is doing it's job very well.
