This will be a weird idea, but my 2008 FLHTCU was giving a ton of problems with noise, vibration, general drivability, and more. I tried everything including motor mounts, alignment, changed to a premium (read expensive) oil synthetic, and nothing worked. I fought this for ever it seemed. I thought something was coming apart. I checked everything. I finally pulled the plugs to see if they were telling a story. Looked nice tan. I did purchase a new set - old ones had 7K on them - and voila, new bike. I now figure the Ion-Sensing spark retard was acting up due to the resistance in one plug being way higher than the other. The bike is like new...
Don't ask me. That is all I can figure. It was not starting hard, it idled good, and ran okay. But now it is quiet and smooth. Go figure.
Interestingly enough, my brother had a similar issue on his 2010 Dyna. He also changed his spark plugs and that fixed the problem. Said it's like a completely new bike. The bike never threw any codes and the spark plugs he removed didn't even have that many miles on them.
Great thing about the Road King. Take the windshield off, and the noise goes away. When I put the damn thing on, it sounds like I'm in a garment factory.
Like someone above said, the 103 doesn't like rpm's below 2000. I don't shift until at least 2500, and most of the time closer to 3000. At 2500 and above, the bike runs smooth as silk. Maybe that's why my average mileage is around 35 mpg
I went from an 88" Dyna this year to the 96" Road King and the engine noise is night and day. The 96" has so much more noise than the 88" does that I also thought something was wrong. I need to try to take the windshield off and ride it to see the difference.
