Thought I'd put the charger on the battery I removed from my 09 Road King last fall. When it started charging a red light came on 'fault'.Could it be the battery didn't need a charge? No problem when I hooked it up to my 02's battery, which is also the original battery.
Typically most chargers "red light" when they recognize an internal short. That condition is the result from many possibilities regardless of age. A typical battery killer can be a repeated large drain with a rapid recharge making it susceptibile to calcification. Chances are that's occured and the battery sat then the voltage dropped below 11 volts for a period of time and calcification occurred between cells causing an internal short. A trickel charger can sometimes de-calcify a battery and you can recover it short term. The bad news is it the recovery won't last long. The good news is "they" are making more. If you are able to recover it with a trickel charger, plan on replacing it soon or it will stick you on the road.
My Tender's red light comes on when it is charging - the green light comes on when its not charging. For example: The green light could be on - then you turn on lights or radio creating a draw and the red light comes on.
I agree with tpmurry, same here with my Battery Tender Jr.
As for jumping the motorcycle off a car? I say only if your brave. I have read to many things that can go wrong with this if your not careful.
I cooked a 2yr old battery the first year I had the bike because I tried using some off brand BS float charger. A new top brand battery was $100+. A battery tender jr. was $15. My recommendation is to save some of your chrome money, or skip a meal at the local fast heart attack joint and get yourself a quality battery tender.

Pretty sure my Tender blinks green while charging then goes to solid green when charged.

Actually it starts out solid red when battery charge is below 95% capacity to blinking green when it's about 95% then solid green when it's 100% and enters maintenance mode.
Blinking red is improper connection or bad battery.
