I stand corrected - you're quite right! I do believe that the 09s are only helical 6th and '10s are helical 5th and 6th. Regardless, for some strange reason H-D puts Syn 3 in all 3 holes at the factory on Softail CVOs (that was the bike I saw at the dealership so labelled).

I've run Syn3 in all 3 of my '04 Road King for 47k miles with no problem. Some guys squawk about running eng oil in the trans but the Twin cam is a roller bearing engine that's capable of running "gear" oil. That 175HP crotch rocket uses the same oil for all 3 applications too. But, I wouldn't be afraid to run the other premium synthetics either.

USMN2010,

Love the bike bro. Man, I was checking out one of those recently at the dealer. I love that paint job. If I could afford two H-Ds I would have purchased it but for now I'll have to be happy with my Street Glide (which I love!). Congrats on such a nice scoot.

Just a suggestion run your Syn 3 in the tranny. Then change to a good quality gear oil, like Bel Ray, Redline, Amsoil, Spectro etc. Then see if you want Syn 3 back in there. That's all we're trying to say. Harley engineers also say to only use Formula + in the '07 Touring Manual. They do not mention Syn3. They also recommend a GL5 rated oil in the Cruise Drive tranny. Syn 3 was recommended in all three holes back around '04, but they also sold Semi Synth gear oil for trannies for guys who know the difference.

Drastic measures have been tried before, but none have ever worked. This stunning photo was captured by an alert photographer during one such attempt.

what about for us here in the north... i ride about 5 months a year, and then scoot has to be put down... would having SYN be better due to storage and create less sludge ?

Synthetic doesn't break down as fast as conventional. Whatever you decide to use, change your oil before putting it in storage because you don't want dirty oil sitting in the system for long periods of time.
