I used to have a 98 wideglide with se 6 speed. It was great for traveling, and easier on the motor at freeway speeds. It did bring the rpms down as you expect it to. It's good if you want to spend the money and do much traveling to use it.

On my SG I still don't run 6 gear till over 70mph. I use 5th and run rpms about 26-2800 and thats well over the speed limit. But it sounds good right there. Any lower and I almost can't hear it, I have RH TD.

Sweeetest sound I've heard in a long time, my engine making those Bassani's sing, at 3K/80mph.

You can't compare rpm at speed between a twin and a 4 cyl. Apples and oranges as far as where the hp and torque show up in the rpm range. Bikes are geared differently for that reason.

My '03 ultra does 70 mph at 2900 rpms. 80 is just a few rpms more, seems like it's just hitting its stride.,,

It feel like I've got to be doing at least 65 before cruising in 6th gear. Got to be careful in my neck of the woods. Our local LEO's like to write tickets.

Go ride a sport bike, you'll cruise at around 6000rpm.

So what is your question?
You are driving 80 and concerned that your local cops will write you a ticket?
I think that is everywhere.

p.s.
Just curious, but do you still wear shorts and flip flops when riding your Harley, like you did when you rode your Goldwing? lol

Being retired and living near the mtn's, I very seldom ride the interstate.
When I'm in 6th gear and 70 mph, I'm turning 2500 rpm's. This is a good subject because I hear various opinion's on how fast you need to be to use 6th gear? What's everybody's opinion on this? I keep my rpm's above 2K in any gear. If I'm two up and start up a hill, I'll drop down a gear to get up to 2500. I might add, it has alot more throttle response and can use 6th gear at 60 mph better since upgrading the AF and Mufflers. JMO

Visit Edmond Oklahoma in the summer time (right on Rt 66) and you will see a lot of Harley riders in shorts and flip flops.

As for the 5 spd with the 88: it took a long time for me to get used to riding in lower RPMs on my 09 SG. It still doesn't feel quite right really. I rather enjoyed cruising on my 02 RKC at 80mph in the higher RPMs and I still got better mileage than SG. Personally I would stick with the 5 spd.
