I just put the DFO on my 01 mm and so far i like it. only put 2100 miles on it tho. Also did the gear drive update to the cams and changed the oil pump and added true duals.
I have the MM in my '01 and after having an experienced tech adjust the idles and adding a PCIII USB I have had zero problems. Recently added Andrews 26A cams...and I am very happy with the results.
Jamie at Fuelmoto tells me that if I have the 1997 ECM update that the PCIII will work! Thanks RKC2001!
That is certainly an option, but I would strongly be leaning toward Hog-Doc's recommendation of a carb conversion. I have a parts list for this conversion somewhere, I will try to find it and post it. IIRC, cost was pretty close to being equal to a PCIII and a tuning session. You might be able to do better by finding some used parts.
Found it, but it's not clear if this was for a TC MM conversion or an EVO MM conversion. Might need to double check that before you start ordering parts if you decide to go that route. Pricing is probably old as well. This was originally posted many years ago.

Ignore any comment about 1997 and newer MM EFI. It isn't the same as your 96 MM EFI. The 96 is junk. It is open loop and NON ADJUSTABLE. There is no changing the map. It runs too rich from the get go and the only aftermarket device is no longer available. Swapping the ECU to a 1997 or newer will allow scanalizers to update the map, but it is still a garbage open loop system.
Your best bet is to change it out to a carb. I'm getting close to doing it myself. I've got 90% of the parts gathered up and am waiting for riding season to taper off before doing it. (June, July and Augist are not 'riding' season around here.)
I have a 01 eglide w/the MM. its been an issue at the Dealer, my Indy said its not a problem,he fixes them all the time, but my dealer had to call the help desk to find a way to tune it. Im tired of dealing with it. When i get the 2800 im going to thundermax and get the closed loop conversion. I just have too many small things i want to buy befor i drop the shiny penny. This is the only option, im not putting any more money into it or any more performance parts until i convert it.
consider review of J and P cycle.. see link, there are a few options for your specific year and model in the market below $300 that plug and play and some others if you are willing to cut wires.
congrats on your low mileage bike...the M & M is fine...most issues are that it is limited if engine performance is greatly increased or if bike is significantly altered..the system itself is rather simple..although most younger techs know little of the system... air filter and slip-on mufflers are no problem with a simple increase in fuel..buy the parts book and the service book NOW so you can service bike yourself..the service book will explain the FI system parts. the two are available many times on e-bay separately for a total of $100. get the real HD book not aftermarket.
96 RK with the MM, I've had it 6 years now and have added all that you see in my sig. I've had the DFO on there for a while and have talked to them several times about settings, first it was 3,3,4,4 then it was 3,6,4,4 which is where it sits now.
I still don't think it is at it's peak in performance, and if I want that then like Moog and Biggzed said, it's time to convert to a carb, I think I'll do mine this summer. Thanks Ed for listing the part list, $600 isn't that bad for a total cost and peace of mind.
