Oil filter gunk
Here is the shortest story I can tell, I have an 09 Ultra with a 106 bottom end and stock heads and 12.5K miles. Changed fluids at 10K, mid December. A couple of weeks ago going down the highway, engine starts tapping and oil pressure starts to swing from 20-ish to 50-ish. Checked oil and surprise, hardly any. Went ahead and changed oil and filter, wish I had kept filter to open up for evidence of bad news, but didn't find anything on the drain plug. May have slid by on that one, still runs strong but has picked up a little ping on acceleration, no idea how it happened, but air cleaner (Stage 1) shows oil in the 9:00 area.
Wonder if oil pump may be to blame? I hear the stock pump may not scavenge as well as it could, and considering upgrade pump. Any advice out there?
Thanks

Also, this doesn't really solve the problem but could help in finding out if there are indeed shavings in the filter that would point to a larger problem....have you considered getting an oil filter that has a magnet to collect shavings? I've also seen out there a ring-type contraption that screws onto the bottom of the filter that is then screwed onto the motor that is contains a magnet. This will work on any standard filter if you didn't want to purchase a more expensive, special filter. Just a thought.
Good luck finding the problem....
