Odd situation yesterday. Out for nice afternoon ride. Took my son his backpack and then he hopped on the back for a short ride to lunch. About 5 minutes down the road, started hearing a "grinding" sound near back left side of scooter. First thought was that something was rubbing on the back tire. Or maybe the drive belt. Only thing I felt was slight vibration in shifter. Took a quick look when we stopped and didn't see anything. Noise was not steady, it stopped and started.
Took him back to his dorm after lunch - same thing! I decided to keep riding for a while and see if I could reproduce the sound. Nothing! Rode for a while then took it in to the dealer to see what they thought. One of their best mechanics gave it a quick once over and said nothing obvious. Said to schedule appointment if I hear it again.
Sounds like it has something to do with the extra weight with the second person on. ride two up again to verify, maybe have two others sit on the bike and then look around.
You Have IDS? Sounds like maybe a bearing in there going bad, a visual may not show anything like the ace mechanic confirmed, you should raise the wheels off the ground on a jack and do a complete inspection. Whatever is starting to go is in the early stages by what you described, the extra weight brought it to your attention because of the heavier load on the drivetrain.
Thanks, Banjo. The mechanic did check the belt and said it was "plenty tight." But, come to think of it, I had the rear brake pads replaced last fall and probably haven't ridden 2 up since then. I'd rather it be that than the IDS...
