Why not a potato sounding idle?

seems like the tighter tolerances would enable a lower viscosity oil for less friction. If these EVO engines have an oil pressure problem at a lower idle, is there any way of getting a higher volume oil pump into the engine or shimming a relieve valve? If I used a higher viscosity oil would that keep the pressure up for a lower idle? With my experiences in loose engines, the oil pressure is lower with bigger tolerances and that will lead to engine failure quicker than the same engine with tighter clearances.

Guess I will have to research that one a little more. Sure this engine is different than the older ones, but did HD make it less reliable? Are the older engines more bullet proof than these EVO's if comparing stock to stock? Anyway, ULTRA, how did you set your idle lower? Is there an air screw like in some cars or do you have to reprogram the idle. I have that option with my 2005 Pontiac GTO with my plug in tuner.

Most do not know that the newer Harleys (Evo and TC) are much more reliable than the older knuckles, panheads, shovels, etc. The old OHV Harleys needed an overhaul after maybe 15 or 20 thousand miles. Rings, valves, etc. You never hear about that today.

I'll leave your other questions for somebody else.

however, a friend of mine reduced his Idle RPM and it does sound better than stock... he has a Fat Boy.

The older bikes had an external oil pump that was not as efficient, but could pump oil at lower RPMs. The twin cam engine has an internal twin-gerotor pump that creates more pressure and flow, but not at very low RPMs, so no Potatos, unless you want to rebuild your top end due to oil starvation.

on mine , right out of the book you remove the air cleaner and straight in on the lower right side of the backing plate there is a hole to stick a small allen wrench through and adjust the HOT idle and then if you look at the top of the arm right there where the cables run [ name of arm escapes me right now ] you can see another small set screw and that is the cold idle ,on my oil pressure the dealer told me that I probably have a HIGH VOLUME oil pump is why I maintain good oil pre. , so yes they do make a high volume pump for the evos and the twin cams , test drove one before I bought mine and at a idle the oil pre. was at 0

Are you confused yet! A lot of what is written is not so.,All Harley motors will sound the same provided they are built the close to the same.If all you want is that sound,there has to be someone near you that can help.Good Luck.
